The future of news -- an optimistic view

With so many people predicting the demise of traditional journalism as we know it, Milton Coleman's take Monday was refreshing.

"News is in great shape. Journalists are better, we have more tools and more ways to hold people accountable," said the president of ASNE and senior editor of The Washington Post.

Coleman did acknowledge the serious problems of the news industry and detailed areas that could suffer in the future from loss of revenue streams.

Accountability journalism which includes time-consuming and expensive investigative projects is one example Coleman gave of a form of journalism at risk as fewer newspapers continue to carry the burden of a large staff able to devote resources to it.
