Visit to the Arizona Republic

Upon arriving to the Arizona Republic, we soon discovered that Jerry was acquainted with one of the Republic's local ad heroes.

Later, we were introduced to other reporters, designers, photographers, and sat in on an editorial board meeting. Some interesting points of interest were some of story planning, as well as an iPhone alert that might make the front page of about the "Obama Administrator to File Lawsuit Over Arizona Immigration Law."

Some key ideas learned from Chad Graham, Social Media Editor, were how the Arizona Republic is reaching out to younger demographics via Facebook, Twitter, and FourSquare. The Republic actually had an iPad giveaway that was designed to recruit fans to the Facebook page. The number of fans doubled from 7,000 to 14,000 after this incentive.

Some suggestions Chad had for high school journalists were to encourage high school journalists to utilize Facebook to find sources, but advised that reporters should call or meet with sources for actual stories. The demographics for the social networking sites was also typically 40- age group.

Overall, it was really cool to see the journalists in action... And, I am looking forward to seeing the Arizona Republic tomorrow. What did you learn from the visit?
