We talked a lot about the importance of accountabilty journalism with Len Downie Jr. this last week. He encouraged us get our students to do stories to hold people in power accountable for their actions.
Here is a great story about a high school journalist and his interview with Arizona State Senator John Huppenthal about his bid for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The student asks some questions about budget cuts and makes Huppenthal very uncomfortable. Here is the link to the story on The Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/19/john-huppenthal-keith-wag_n_618317.html. It would also be a great tool to use for our students to see what they are capable of. Here is also the video, posted on YouTube.

I saw this the other day. I love how the senator squirms in his chair when he realizes that he is getting taken to task by a high school journalist. It just proves that good research is key.

Thank you for posting this one, Allison. It is a classic example of what high school students can do to hold their public officials accountable.

I love that a kid had the power to do this interview! Thanks for posting this Allison. It is clear evidence that high school students can have a state impact as well as a local one.

ReplyDeleteThis is the coolest. I love it when CTE students do what they are taught to do.
