Frank LoMonte demonstrated his expansive knowledge of first amendment rights at a seminar early in the second week of the ASNE Reynolds institute.
I was impressed by LoMonte's expertise and candor addressing some of journalism adviser's most pressing needs. He answered some long standing anxieties I had concerning my school's publication and the law.
Particularly pressing for me was the fair use policy and how the Hazlewood decision affected my state in particular.
I will definitely be looking up my school district's specific publication policy in light of what LoMonte said.

Yes, checking out my school district's policy on publications is pretty darn high on my list, too. Also, my school is getting a new principal next year, so I envision a conversation during pre-planning with him, me and my co-editors.
ReplyDeleteI too am getting a new principal, and am anxious about who will be replacing Joel. He was great about not exercising prior review; I'm not sure I'll get so lucky this time.
ReplyDeleteI know that there is a video that I believe SPLC puts out on the 1st Amendment for administrators. I have a copy in Calif. that I can send you. It basically is a hey just a reminder type of video.
