In order to photograph, videotape or write about anything you need to become immersed in what you are

trying to capture.

I was excited for our weekend off from our classroom work to do just that - mingle with the

local people.

The Farmer's Market in downtown Phoenix blew my

mind away. There were all kinds of people - from

Navajo and Mexican jewelry makers to local artists and farmers selling their wonderful products. I managed to support the local market quite a bit as there were many deals and delights to investigate. As I sit here munching on the pecan brittle I was trying to bring home to a loved one, I can say without a doubt that talking to these people really made me realize how hard-working, friendly and talented the locals are.

Later in the day, a few of us went to the Heard native American museum. I was in awe as numerous artifacts, paintings and the like were on display to capture so many Native American tribes. It was

a strong reminder of how the west began and where it stands today because of the indigenous people. One of the best things I saw was the artwork of local teenagers. It was nice to seen how they carry on the traditions of their respective cultures through their paintings.

On Saturday a visit to the newly established Duce eatery (thanks Jamalee) proved to be a very cool thing and Phoenix should be proud of the creativity of their local people in trying to attract locals and tourists to the area.

Sunday a visit to St. Mary's Basilica refreshed my soul. The welcoming we received not only walking in the door but throughout the entire service was wonderful and a stroll in the calm garden afterwards made me even more grateful for my blessings in being chosen to come here.
